Aussie Christmas Day games for a summer crowd

Christmas Day in Australia usually means heat, a long lunch and a mix of ages. Games that work tend to be short, easy to explain and happy in the shade. Here are some ideas, starting with two free printables.

Start with something free

• Aussie Christmas picture bingo card: a free illustrated card you can print and play at the table.
• Aussie Christmas trivia sheet: a free printable trivia sheet for between courses.

Games that suit a hot day

• Table trivia in teams. Split the table by family or by age, read questions between courses and keep a running score on a napkin.
• Picture bingo after lunch. Good for kids who can’t read yet, and nobody has to move.
• A morning treasure hunt. Hide clues before the heat sets in. Keep clues away from the barbecue, pool and road.
• Paper plane contests. Fold, then fly for distance or accuracy in a clear space, away from faces, food and candles.
• Pass-the-phone guessing games. One phone, no setup, and easy to stop when the pudding comes out.

Tips

• Print at 100% / Actual size, on plain A4 or US Letter paper.
• Pick one or two games and keep each round short.
• Give the youngest players a grown-up partner.
